DRIVE FOR
“There is no better time to get involved with Virginia Tech
Athletics, and there is no better way to impact our success
than to join the Hokie Club, no matter where you live,” “It’s
about our students and scholarship opportunities, and it’s
about competing at the highest levels.
“We will keep working hard to represent Virginia Tech in a
first-class manner and make the Hokie Nation proud, but
we need our alumni and friends to step up and be a part of
it all and to join the Drive for 25.”
- Director of Athletics, Whit Babcock
Coach Beamer’s retired No. 25 jersey symbolizes the
collective spirit of Hokie Nation. With Beamer’s blessing,
current football head coach Justin Fuente affords a differ-
ent Tech player the honor of wearing the No. 25 jersey for
each week’s game. The gesture serves as a reminder of
Beamer’s assertion that “Virginia Tech is at its best when
we’re all pulling together.”
The Drive for 25 logo debuted on the Virginia Tech
Carilion Court on Feb. 12, 2017 as the Hokies knocked
off No. 12 ranked Virginia by a 80-78 margin in double
OT at Cassell Coliseum. Tech trailed by a 37-23 margin at
halftime, but thanks to a defense that allowed a mere 26
points over the next 20 minutes, a rousing halftime speech
to the crowd by Coach Beamer and a raucous Cassell
crowd, Coach Buzz Williams and the squad recorded a
second straight home win over the Cavaliers.
“It wasn’t a situation where, ‘OK, I got the scholarship,
so my parents won’t have to pay for it. It was like, ‘OK,
now I’ve got this scholarship, so now I can go to college.’
Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to go. I had two
hard-working parents, and as much as they loved me, they
wouldn’t have been able to afford to send me to college.”
- Women’s basketball head coach Kenny Brooks
on receiving his college scholarship
The Drive for 25 logo made its first appearance in Lane
Stadium on Nov. 26, 2016 when Tech registered a 52-10
win over Virginia to claim its 13th consecutive victory over
its in-state rival.
“There is strength in numbers. Compared to other top pro-
grams in the nation, we don’t have enough folks on board
as annual donors. This is a tremendous opportunity for
fans and alumni to demonstrate their love for the Hokies
by making a gift and making a difference in the lives of our
students and student-athletes for generations to come.”
- Frank Beamer
