Seufer named ACC Men's Performer of the Week
Tech men's team now is ranked a program-best No. 12 in the latest USTFCCCA poll
October 4, 2017
Virginia Tech cross country runner Peter Seufer was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Men’s Performer of the Week in an announcement made by the league office Wednesday morning.
NC State’s Elly Henes is the Women’s Performer of the Week. The Wolfpack’s Joe Bistritz was named the Men’s Freshman of the Week, while the Dominique Clairmonte took that honor on the women’s side.
Seufer, a redshirt sophomore from Lynchburg, Virginia, finished 15th out of 279 runners at the Louisville Sports Commission Cross Country Classic held Saturday at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. He ran the 8K course in a time of 23 minutes, 48.74 seconds, and he recorded his career-best time at the 8K distance, shaving more than 30 seconds off his previous best mark.
Seufer, who won the Virginia Tech Alumni Invite (6K) last year for his first collegiate win, missed the majority of last fall’s cross country season with mononucleosis. He received a medical hardship waiver to preserve the year of eligibility and thus has two more years of eligibility remaining after this season.
Behind Seufer, the Virginia Tech men’s cross country team finished third at the Louisville Sports Commission Cross Country Classic in a field that included 30 teams, with seven of those being ranked in the top 30 by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
In other major news Wednesday, the Virginia Tech men’s cross country team moved to No. 12 in the USTFCCCA poll – the program’s highest ranking ever. The Hokies entered last weekend ranked No. 24, but moved up 12 spots after the third-place finish. The Hokies are the second-highest ranked team in the ACC behind Syracuse, which checked in at No. 3.
The Hokies return to Louisville on Oct. 14 for the second of their three straight meets at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer State Park. Both Tech squads will be participating in the NCAA Pre-Nationals that Saturday morning.
