BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s cross country team broke into the national rankings Tuesday, coming in at No. 28 in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches poll.

The Hokies are coming off their first win of the season, having won the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic this past Saturday at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky. Tech finished with 59 points to beat 20 other Division I schools.

Andrew Gaiser paced the Hokies by finishing seventh, and Peter Seufer came in ninth. Six Tech runners finished in the top 20.

The Hokies are one of just three ACC schools in the national poll, though NC State and Louisville are receiving votes.

Tech, which has been ranked at some point in three of the past five years, was ranked for three weeks last season, earning a top ranking of No. 18. The Hokies went on to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships for just the second time since 1987 and came in 27th.

Both Virginia Tech teams will be off this weekend before returning to the course on Oct. 14. The squads will be competing in the Penn State National Open held in State College, Pennsylvania.
