BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech cross country teams departed today for Louisville, Kentucky, the site of Saturday’s Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic in which both the men’s and women’s teams will be competing.
The meet, one of the biggest this weekend, features approximately 125 college teams from around the U.S. Some of the teams competing on the men’s side include Auburn, Louisville, Marquette, Tennessee, Western Kentucky Xavier, East Tennessee State, Liberty and Davidson. The women will face women’s teams from most of those same institutions.
The meet marks the Hokies’ first road meet of the season. They most recently competed in the Virginia Tech Alumni Invite two weeks ago – one in which redshirt senior Shannon Morton claimed the individual crown in the women’s race and in which sophomore Peter Seufer won on the men’s side.
Seufer is part of a Tech men's squad that received votes in the latest United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national poll. Both squads are ranked fourth in the Southeast Region.
The Hokies did not compete in this event a year ago, but did run on this course – the one at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park – last year when they competed at the NCAA Pre-National Meet.
The men’s race starts at 9:30 a.m. (ET) and the women’s race starts at 10:15 a.m.
