Tech and Cavaliers meet for Clash point: Building on a tradition started in 1895, the Commonwealth Clash is a head-to-head points-based competition within the 22 varsity sports in which the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech compete against each other. At the end of the spring season, the institution with the most points will be crowned the champion of the Commonwealth Clash. The Hokies, who won the Clash last year, currently hold a 7.5 to 4.5 point lead.
Hokies versus Virginia (see more Page 5 of game notes): Entering the weekend, Tech and Virginia have faced off a total of 184 times, the most common opponent for the Hokies' baseball team (second most is VMI at 177 games).
The series started back in 1900, and the Cavaliers hold the all-time series at 99-85, including a 56-30 mark at home and 16-2 in ACC home games. Tech has lost its last eight in Charlottesville, last beating Virginia on its home field March 9, 2012 in 11 innings 10-8. This series will mark the first meetings between the two schools since 2005 that Virginia is not ranked.
Coach Szefc against Virginia: As the head coach at Maryland, current Virginia Tech head coach John Szefc faced the Cavaliers a total of nine times and owns an overall mark of 3-6 mark. Of note, all but one of those nine games has been played in Charlottesville. In 2013, his team went 1-2 in an ACC series here; in 2014, the Terps beat Virginia in an ACC tournament game, before losing in the Super Regionals here two games to one. En route to its 2015 national title, Virginia beat Maryland two games to one in that year's Super Regional.
Winning on the road: Just four weeks into the ACC schedule, the Hokies have already won two games on the road in the conference - one at Georgia Tech (March 17) and the other at Boston College (March 24). The two victories are already more than last year's win total - the team went 1-14 - and matches the win total for 2016 (2-13). Since 2013, when the team tied the program's best mark with an 8-7 road league record, Tech had won at most four games - in 2015 - the last time they made the ACC Tournament.
Speaking of 2015: During the 2015 season, the Hokies posted an 11-9 record during the month of March, which marks the last time the team posted a winning record in any month of more than 10 games played. The most wins since then in a single month (with at least 10 games played) was seven during March 2017 when Tech went 7-12. The Hokies eclipse that win total last month, when they posted an 8-10 record.
