Dauby homers in loss at Campbell

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Virginia Tech’s Matt Dauby hit the team’s 75th home run of the season, however the Campbell Camels limited the Hokies to four hits to claim a 7-2 victory in nonconference action at Jim Perry Stadium Tuesday night.

Campbell (20-23) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first with Cole Hallum knocking in two on a double to left. Zach Minnick followed a hit batsman with a single to left to score Hallum and the Camels led 3-0. Matthew Barefoot doubled home a single run in the second to make it a four-run contest.

Tech (20-27) scored its first run in the top of the third when Dauby led off the frame with his fourth home run of the season, eighth of his career.

The Camels answered in the home half of the third when Hallum hit his eighth home run of the season. Campbell added single runs in the fifth and eighth to provide the final runs for the home team.

The Hokies had several chances to cut into their deficit, including in the sixth when they loaded the bases with one out on three hit batsman. But Camels reliever Erik Dowse got back-to-back infield popups to get out of the jam.

In the seventh, they had runners on first and second with one out, but Campbell turned its second double play of the evening to end that threat.

The Hokies’ JD Mundy drove home the team’s second run in the ninth with a grounder to first that plated Mac Caples, who doubled to lead off the frame.

• Jack Owens: single in third, 71st hit of the season, tied for first in the ACC with Virginia’s Adam Haseley.

More Tech notes

• The Hokies hit their 75th home run of the year, the second most ever in an ACC season at the school, trailing only the 2010 squad that hit 81. In 1988, the Hokies set a school record with 140 and since then, the 75 this year are the third most, behind the 2010 and 1997 (80) squads.
• Tech is now first in the nation in home runs, one ahead of both Wake Forest and Tennessee Tech, who were both idle this evening.
• The Hokies were hit by three pitches, which pushed their season total to a school record 82. The prior record was 73 back in 2010 and prior to that were the 68 in 2009.
• The team came into the weekend leading the ACC and fifth in the nation in HBP.

• The Hokies will take a week off for exams before heading back to the field next Tuesday with a home game against Northeastern. First pitch from English Field at Union Park is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
