Dauby homers again in Hokies loss

Mountaineers use Tech errors to claim 8-6 victory

BLACKSBURG – Senior Matt Dauby hit his second home run in as many games to help Virginia Tech baseball to a 5-0 lead, but the visiting No. 25-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers capitalized on three Hokie errors to score four unearned runs and leave English Field at Union Park with an 8-6 nonconference victory Tuesday evening.

Dauby’s three-run shot was his second in as many games as he also hit a two-run shot Saturday against Georgia Tech. The long ball capped a Tech four-run third inning that included Tom Stoffel scoring from third on a wild pitch. Mac Caples scored an inning before on a sac bunt by Rahiem Cooper and the Hokies jumped out 5-0.

West Virginia (24-15) answered in the top of the fourth with six runs of its own, three of which were unearned. The key hit was a Kyle Davis three-run home run, which followed Tech’s first error of the frame, while the second with two outs, allowed two more runs to cross.

Tech (20-23) pulled even in the fifth, benefitting from a Mountaineer error to tie the game. Nick Anderson singled back through the middle and moved to second on an error. With one out, Joe Freiday, Jr. singled to left driving in Anderson.

The tie did not last for long as another Tech error moved Chase Illig to third base where a sac fly by Kyle Gray gave West Virginia a go-ahead run. They added an insurance run in the top of the ninth after Brandon White tripled and scored off an Ivan Gonzalez sac bunt.

• Stoffel: double, 16th of the season, 32nd of his career.

More Tech notes

• The Hokies hit their 72nd home run of the year, the second most ever in an ACC season at the school, trailing only the 2010 squad that hit 81. Since 1988, now only five times has a Tech team hit more than 70 in a single season.
• The team came into the game tied for the nation’s lead in home runs with Wake Forest. The Deacons were cancelled today.
