Facing the Panthers: All-time, the Hokies are 13-15-1 against Pitt and includes a 5-4 mark since the Panthers joined the ACC. However, Pitt holds a 6-3 advantage in the Steel City and has won each of the three series between the two schools held there. They have also won the last two games and have won the last two series.
In like a lamb, out like a lion?: The old English proverb (and common Pennsylvania saying) describes typical March weather, but the same could be said this year for the Hokies. After an 8-1 start, Tech started the month of March with four straight losses and went just 1-7 with three losses in extra innings. But since, the Hokies are back to their winning ways, victorious in five of their last six and three of four in the ACC. The wins include two shutouts and reaching double figures in runs scored three times.
Road Warriors: The Hokies opened the 2017 season with four straight wins on the road - three straight at USC Upstate and the first game at Nevada - for the first time since the 2009 season. After a Friday loss to the Wolf Pack, Tech responded with two more wins improving to 6-1 on the road - marking its best start to a season on the road since 1992, when the Hokies won their first seven. Tech has already won more games on the road this year (7) than they did all of last season, when the squad won five. In 2015, the team won eight games and in 2014 just four. The last time the Hokies won more than 10 games on the road was 2013, when they went 13-8.
Hokies top team in nation turning the double play: Entering the weekend, Tech has turned 31 double plays, which leads the country, and is one more than the 30 the had all of last season. In their history in the ACC, the most double plays the team has turned in a single season is 62, in 62 games back in 2013, while the highest per game average was 1.15 (59 in 51 games) in 2005. The Hokies are currently turning 1.34 per game.
Tech second in nation in home runs: The Hokies have hit 38 home runs in 2017 second behind fellow ACC member Wake Forest. The total is already better than the last three seasons. Since the Hokies have been a member of the ACC (since 2005), Tech has surpassed 40 home runs hit in a season five times, with the high-water mark being 81 hit during the 2010 season.
