Hokies held annual Shave event on Sunday

The Tech event has raised more than $22,000 for St. Baldrick's Foundation

BLACKSBURG - For seven straight years, the Virginia Tech baseball program has partnered with the St. Baldrick's Foundation to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer. On Sunday, November 13 on Tech's Drillfield, the Hokies were also joined by members of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets for the 2016 #Hokieball "Shave for the Brave" that saw more than 80 participants go bald for the great cause.

The Virginia Tech event has already raised more than $22,000 and has catapulted the Hokies into third place in the St. Baldrick's friendly competition called the “Battle of the Bald” - the ultimate college showdown with schools competing to see who can raise the most money this fall. On Dec. 15, the champion school will get to take home the Bald Cup. Check out the standings at the following site - CLICK HERE.

The Hokies finished second last year, roughly $4,000 shy of first place and are currently $6,000 behind first place. Teams can raise money through events between Sept. 1 and Dec. 5 and donations can still be accepted. Going to the official site - CLICK HERE - gives all the details. The event, which in its seven years has reached a combined level of donation to St. Baldrick’s from the Tech baseball program to more than $150,000, is part of the baseball team’s 19 Ways campaign, which was started back in 2010 and challenges the members of the Tech baseball team to find 19 Ways to help make a difference within the community during the current academic year.

The Hokies have already been involved with several initiatives, including Lemonade for Livy, Hokie Helpers and Special Olympics bowling. Other events anticipated for the seventh year of 19 Ways include assisting in the efforts with Micah’s Backpack, Taste of Inspiration (partners with the Special Olympics) and hosting a military appreciation breakfast, to name a few.
