The weekend series: Virginia Tech baseball travels to the state of Kentucky this weekend for the first time in more than a decade and will face the No. 4 Louisville Cardinals for the first time in over two decades. The rare Saturday, Sunday, Monday ACC series for the Hokies - the first time they will play this type of series - will culminate on Monday night when Tech will play its first regular-season game nationally televised by the ESPN Network. The only other game Tech played that was nationally televised on an ESPN channel (ESPN2) was the 2013 ACC Baseball Championship game on May 26 versus North Carolina, a 4-1 loss

History versus the Cardinals: Virginia Tech and Louisville - two teams that squared off at least twice a season every year starting in 1979 (except 1983) through 1995 - have not faced each other since a Hokies’ 6-2 win in Louisville, Kentucky on April 30, 1995. Tech holds the advantage in the series with a 45-12 overall record, winning seven of the last eight, and are 20-9 all-time in Louisville, including winning the last two and four of the last five entering the weekend.
History in the Bluegrass State: As stated above, the Hokies have not faced Louisville in Kentucky since 1995, but Tech did make a trip to Morehead, Kentucky for a weekend series against Morehead State during the 2003 season. The Hokies won both games over the Eagles (March 22, 19-7 and March 23, 18-5) giving them a four-game winning streak in the state and an overall 27-11 mark.
During the 1994 Metro Baseball Tournament hosted by Louisville, Tech played Tulane (1-1), Charlotte (1-0), Southern Miss (1-0) and South Florida (1-0). The Hokies won the title with a 5-3 win over Tulane on May 22 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in school history, the first time (of four) under legendary Hall of Fame head coach Chuck Hartman.
The Hokies played their first games in the Bluegrass State in Lexington against Kentucky back in 1924 (May 2-3), splitting the series against the Wildcats, 1-1.
History on Mondays: Again, this will be the first time the Hokies will play a Saturday, Sunday, Monday ACC series in its 12 seasons in the league. However, back in 2005 - Tech’s first in the conference - the Hokies played a three-game series in Blacksburg against Clemson May 8-10, a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday set. Tech won the first game, before dropping the next two.
Since then, the Hokies have played just eight times on a Monday and have compiled a 3-5 record. Ironically, three of those games were played last year, including a doubleheader, and Tech lost all three. Prior to that, the Hokies had a three-game winning streak on Mondays and included a win at No. 30 Liberty (4-3 on April 14, 2014).
