The weekend series: The Hokies, who just ended their longest homestand since 2010 - an 11-gamer, will be on the road for 12 of their next 16 games. That string starts this weekend with their first road ACC series at No. 22 Georgia Tech. The games are scheduled to start on Friday at 6 p.m. continue with a 4 p.m. Saturday first pitch and conclude on Sunday at 1 p.m.
History versus the Yellow Jackets: Georgia Tech controls the all-time series with the Hokies, holding a 26-15 overall mark, which includes a 22-11 record in ACC regular-season games and a 16-8 record at home. The Hokies have won just two of the 11 series with the Yellow Jackets but, ironically, the last time the Hokies won a series was back in 2010, when they took 2 of 3 in Atlanta and then beat them again, 6-2, in the ACC Tournament. Tech also won its other series in Atlanta, taking 2 of 3 during the 2007 season as well.
The 11-game homestand: The 11-game homestand (in 15 days) the Hokies just concluded was their longest since the 2010 season, when Tech played 12 home games in 13 days - March 5 through the 17 - and posted a 9-3 record. Since then, the Hokies have had a nine-game, nine-day homestand (6-3) in 2011, a 10-game, 15-day homestand (7-3) in 2012 and a 10-game, 13-day homestand (7-3) last season. The Hokies went 6-5 in homestand and included a pair of walk-off victories.
ACC road opener: For only the third time in Tech’s 12 seasons in the conference, the Hokies opened the ACC schedule at home - the other two times were NCAA regional seasons 2010 (won the series over Maryland, 2-1) and 2013 (lost the series to No. 14 GT, 2-1). The following weekend, when Tech was on the road, the team was swept by No. 7 Clemson in 2010 and swept Duke in 2013. This will mark the third time the Hokies will play their first road ACC series in Atlanta, winning the 2007 series over No. 21 GT, but being swept in 2008 by No. 19 GT. In the prior 11 seasons, the Hokies have been at least .500 in conference play after weekend No. 2 four times, which includes the last three seasons and 2007.
Facing a ranked Georgia Tech team in Atlanta: In its ACC history, the Hokies have played 27 ranked teams on the road in an ACC series, and they have won just three of them. Of the three, Virginia Tech has won two of them at Georgia Tech. In fact, the Hokies first road series win over a ranked team was in 2007 in Atlanta. The teams split the first two, then the Hokies scored three runs in the ninth to pull out a 5-4 win on Sunday, and claim the series. In 2010, the Hokies won the first two games, including a Friday 3-1 victory in 11 innings that helped them to the series win.
