The weekend series: Tech continues its longest homestand since 2010 and opens up ACC play at home for only the third time since joining the league when the Hokies welcome the No. 5 Miami Hurricanes to English Field this weekend. The series starts with a 5:30 p.m. contest on Friday, which is followed by games on Saturday and Sunday that are slated for 1 p.m. first pitches.
History versus Miami: The Hokies have faired a lot better against the Hurricanes in Blacksburg than anywhere else, but Miami holds the edge in the all-time series at 26-7. Five of Tech’s seven wins have come at English Field and includes two series wins in 2012, when Miami was No. 6 in the polls, and 2010, when the Hurricanes were No. 9. Interestingly, the only current Hokie to appear in a game that ended in a Tech victory over Miami is Matt Dauby - on March 24, 2013. He was inserted as a defensive replacement in the ninth in Tech’s 8-5, 10-inning win at Miami.
The 11-game homestand: The current 11-games homestand (in 15 days) for the Hokies is their longest since the 2010 season, when Tech played 12 home games in 13 days - March 5 through the 17 - and posted a 9-3 record. Since then, the Hokies have had a nine-game, nine-day homestand (6-3) in 2011, a 10-game, 15-day homestand (7-3) in 2012 and a 10-game, 13-day homestand (7-3) last season. The Hokies are 6-2 in their current homestand that includes a pair of walk-off victories.
ACC home opener: For only the third time in Tech’s 12 seasons in the conference, the Hokies open the ACC schedule at home - the other two times were 2010 and 2013 (NCAA regional seasons). Overall, Tech is: 4-7 in ACC opening games - winning in opener in 2007, 2009, 2012 and 2015; 2-9 in ACC opening games at home - winning its last two; and 0-2 when they are the same. Through the entire weekend, Tech is: 2-9 in ACC opening series - winning in 2007 and 2010; 3-8 in ACC opening series at home - winning in 2010, 2014 and 2015; and 1-1 when they are the same.
Some more on the ACC opening weekend: This will be the third time Tech opens its ACC slate against Miami, the two previous were on the road. This will be the fifth time the Hokies open against a ranked team - the Hurricanes were not ranked either time - and they’ve won one - at No. 21 Georgia Tech in 2007. This will be the ninth time the Hokies host a ranked team in their ACC home opener, and they’ve won one - sweeping No. 1 Virginia last year. In fact, in home opening weekends, Tech has won seven straight, also sweeping Pittsburgh in 2014 and winning the final game of the 2013 home opening weekend versus Georgia Tech. In 11 seasons, Tech is 11-19 overall in its home opening ACC weekend, but just 9-24 after its ACC opening weekend. They are 3-3 when they are the same.
