CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 11th-ranked Miami Hurricanes turned three Virginia Tech fifth-inning errors into six unearned runs to help them post a 14-4 victory Saturday night at Mark Light Field in the second game of a three-game ACC series.
With the win the Hurricanes clinched the series, while improving to 27-9 overall and 13-4 in the ACC. Tech dropped its record to 17-19 overall and 7-10 in the league.
For the second night in a row, Miami jumped out to a four-run lead, but this time the Hurricanes sent nine men to the plate in the second inning, not the first. A Zack Collins solo home run opened the frame and a two-RBI double by Garrett Kennedy made it 4-0.
Tech cut into the deficit in the fourth when Rahiem Cooper singled to lead off the inning and came around to score on an Erik Payne single.
However, in the bottom of the fifth, the Hokies could not catch the ball as two of the errors were on fly balls to the outfield. In all, seven Hurricanes crossed the plate and Tech was not able to overcome the Miami advantage.
They did, though, respond with three in the sixth as Alex Perez drove one home with a sac fly and Payne knocked in two more with a double, giving him three on the night.
In the eighth, Perez, who calls Miami, Florida home, laced a grounder through the left side of the infield to notch the 200th hit of his Hokie career. He becomes just the eighth Tech player to reach the milestone number over the past decade.
The two teams will conclude the ACC series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
