CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The No. 11-ranked Miami Hurricanes jumped out to an early lead and the Virginia Tech baseball team could not overcome the deficit and dropped an 11-1 decision on Friday night at Mark Light Field in the opening game of a three-game ACC series.
Miami (26-9, 12-4 ACC) got out in front in its first at-bats of the night when the Hurricanes sent nine men to the plate in the first inning and scored four of them, three of which were earned. They added two more in the fourth inning on a two-run homer by Garrett Kennedy.
Tech (17-18, 7-9 ACC) plated its only run of the game in the sixth frame on an RBI triple by Alex Perez that brought in Rahiem Cooper, who single with one out. The Hokies then loaded the bases but were unable to bring home another in the inning.
The Hurricanes answered in the home half of the sixth with four more runs with Brandon Lopez driving in a pair with a single, giving him a team-high three for the evening.
Sean Keselica took the loss on the mound for Tech, his first of the season during ACC action, and falls to 4-2 on the season. Thomas Woodrey improved to 4-1 on the year as he picked up the win for the Hurricanes.
For Perez, the triple was his sixth of the year, tying him for the third most ever in a single season at Tech with four other Hokies, and it was the 13th of his career, the third most ever in a career at the school.
The two teams will continue the ACC series on Saturday with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
