WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Brendon Hayden had a season-high three hits and reached base all four times he was at the plate, but the Virginia Tech baseball fell to William & Mary, 5-1, in nonconference action Tuesday evening at Plumeri Park.

Hayden’s night consisted of a single in the first, a pair of doubles that led off innings four and six and a hit-by-pitch that loaded the bases in the eighth that led to Tech’s only run of the night.

William & Mary (8-4) opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single by Matthew Tilley, but ballooned its lead in the fourth to 5-0 on a grand slam home run by Willie Shaw.

Four of those five runs were earned charged to Tech starter Joey Sullivan (0-2), who tossed four innings and struck out five, but also walked four batters. Sean Kennedy threw the final four frames, allowed three hits, no runs and struck out six, including the side in the eighth.

Tech (7-9) scored its only run of the contest in the eighth after the Hokies chased W&M’s Aaron Fernandez (1-0). Alex Perez doubled to lead off the inning – the fourth time Tech had its leadoff runner on board – which was followed by an Erik Payne walk.

The Tribe brought in a southpaw from the pen in Andrew White to face the left-hand hitting Hayden, which resulted in the HBP. White, though, got a double-play ball – which scored Perez for his 22nd run of the year – and a strikeout to end the threat surrendering just the one run.

The two teams are scheduled to play another game against each other on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. start.
