BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Virginia Tech baseball team fell to Rider, 4-3, in nonconference action at Jim Perry Stadium Sunday afternoon, as the Broncs scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth and then held on for the win.
With two outs and a runner on second, Rider’s Justin Thomas laced a single back through the middle that scored James Locklear, who walked to open the frame and then stole second.
Eric Thomas closed the game for the Broncs, allowing just a one-out walk – the seventh free pass of the game for Tech – but it never moved past first base. He earned the save for David Hafer, who picked up the win after surrendering the tying run in the top of the eighth.
Rider (1-1) opened the game with a single run in the first, then took a 3-2 lead in a bizarre fourth that saw Tech starter Aaron McGarity strike out the first two batters, but both reached base. One of them scored on Greg Fazio’s RBI double, while the other was thrown out at the plate on the same play.
DeFazio then score on a failed pickoff attempt at third – he took the base on the throw to the plate during his double.
The Hokies scored their first two runs when Miguel Ceballos hit an RBI double in the second that scored Brendon Hayden and then Ricky Surum gave Tech a 2-1 lead on a solo home run, the first of his career.
Trailing 3-2, Alex Perez hit a one out single in the eighth and it appeared Tech had runners on first and third after a Hayden single, but an errant throw back to first allowed Perez to score the tying run.
McGarity tossed a career-high seven innings and struck out a career-high seven batters but did not factor in the decision.
The Campbell Invitational concludes on Monday with a doubleheader for the Hokies – first facing the Broncs again at Noon followed by a Tech-Campbell game at approximately 3:30 p.m.
