The weekend: Tech opens up its 122nd season of baseball by traveling to Macon, Georgia to face the Bears of Mercer. The two teams have only played twice before - a doubleheader in Macon back in 1983, which the teams split. A snapshot of the Hokies’ history versus the Bears is located to the right. Mercer is a member of the Southern Conference (they joined this year), and Tech all-time against current teams from that league are a combined 200-92-3 (.683).

Tech in season openers: The Hokies have posted a 62-57-2 record in their previous 121 season openers. The last time a Tech season opener was played at home was in 1995, and in the 19 years since, the Hokies have recorded an 11-8 mark, but that includes the team winning five of their last seven and six of their last nine.

In that 19-year span, Tech has opened the season in the state of Georgia twice, back in 2012 and 2005. Both weekend trips were successful, as the Hokies went 3-1 at the Kennesaw State Tournament in 2012, defeating Bradley twice (6-4, Feb. 17; & 11-1, Feb. 18) and splitting games with the host Owls (3-2, Feb. 17; & losing 6-3, Feb. 19). At the Savannah State Invitational in 2005, Tech dropped its opener to Villanova (5-3, Feb. 18), but rebounded with wins over Navy (9-0, Feb. 19) and the host Tigers (11-7, Feb. 21).

Playing in Georgia: In its program history, Tech has played 94 games in the Peach State and have compiled a 39-55 overall record. More than half (49) of those games have been played in Statesboro and 30 have been in Atlanta. Only two have been played in Macon.

Happy “Opening” Day: For the first time in program history (since 1892), Tech will open a season before Valentine’s Day. And for just the third time the Hokies will play a baseball game on Valentine’s Day (the earliest start prior to this season), as they opened the 2014 and 2003 seasons on Feb. 14. Adding to that, if the Hokies play the first three games as scheduled this weekend, it will be the most games played before Feb. 16 in their program history (3 - prior was 2 in 2003 and 1892).

According to the history books, Tech played two games back in 1892 against Newports on Feb. 1 and Feb. 2 - the earliest ever start - and their only two games that season, the program’s first.
