BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech sophomore pitcher Aaron McGarity was recently named a second team summer collegiate All-American by Perfect Game. Players earned their selections to the team based upon their summer performances, with an emphasis placed on the most competitive leagues.

McGarity played for the Baltimore Redbirds of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, was named an all-star and helped lead the team to the postseason title.

During the season, he appeared in seven games, all starts and posted a 4-1 mark with a 1.76 earned run average. He struck out 52 batters in 46 innings pitched and in the playoffs won his only start after going seven innings with four strikeouts.

Among the league leaders, the Richmond, Virginia, native finished second in the league n strikeouts, tied for fourth in the league in starts, was fifth in innings and sixth in ERA.

There were 18 pitchers named to one of the three teams and McGarity was the only one from an ACC school, as just two players in all – Boston College’s Chris Shaw was a second team DH from the Cape Cod League – were selected as summer collegiate All-Americans by Perfect Game.
