BLACKSBURG -- All the details for the 2015 Virginia Tech “Baseball Night in Blacksburg” are now set. The eighth annual event, which is sponsored by Bull & Bones Brewhaus & Grill, is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 7 from 6-9 p.m. in Lane Stadium with Charlie Manuel, former Major League Baseball World Series-winning manager and Southwest Virginian, as the honored guest.
“We are honored and thankful to have Charlie Manuel as our guest speaker for this year’s event,” Tech baseball coach Patrick Mason said. “To have a World Series-winning manager, who is also a native to this region, is an absolute perfect way celebrate the start of our season.”
Baseball Night in Blacksburg has featured a number of high-profile guests for its annual banquet, which began in 2008 with Baltimore Oriole legend Cal Ripken, Jr. The others include Jim Palmer, Mike Williams, Billy Wagner, Bobby Valentine, former Tech players Franklin Stubbs and Brad Clontz - the team’s only World Series alums - and Tech’s Hall of Fame coach Chuck Hartman.
Manuel certainly fits into this group, as the former Carroll and Rockbridge County native, played in the majors for six seasons and managed for another 12 seasons and won exactly 1,000 games. The Parry McCluer High School graduates’ notable achievements include six division titles, two National League pennants and a World Series Championship as the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2008. He also guided the Phillies to more wins than any other manager in franchise history and is currently the team’s senior advisor to the general manager.
Ticketing information includes a cost of $75 per person ($35 for students or kids 13 and under) and can be purchased by calling the Virginia Tech baseball office at (540) 231-9976. For those interested in a more intimate experience, a private, VIP cocktail hour with Manuel prior to the public portion of the evening (5-6 p.m.) is available. Access to this reception can be gained by purchasing a ticket for $200. A Home Run Package of eight tickets can be purchased for $1,500.
All proceeds of the auction and banquet will go to Virginia Tech baseball and the Hokies’ efforts to improve various aspects of their program. Recent efforts included the building of an indoor baseball facility beyond the left-field foul pole at English Field, which is available for the team’s use year-round, and enhancements to English Field, which included the addition of artificial turf and expanded dugouts just prior to the start of the 2012 season.
