BLACKSBURG - Chosen by the Virginia College Sports Information Directors (VaSID) and announced today, juniors Mark Zagunis and Brendon Hayden have been named to the 2014 VaSID University Division All-State Baseball team as Zagunis makes the first team as a catcher and Hayden the second team as a designated hitter.

For Zagunis, who has been named to his third straight VaSID first team, he joins former Tech players Matt Griswold (3x OF, 1997-99) and Wyatt Toregas (DH, 2x C, 2002-04) as the only Hokies to ever garner three First Team All-VaSID honors. Bo Durkac (3B, 1994-95), Barry Gauch (C, 1997, 1999) and Joe Saunders (P, 2001-02) are the only other Hokies to be selected a first teamer twice.

Zagunis, a Cinnaminson, New Jersey, native, capped his final season with Tech – he was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the third round of this year's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft – by starting every game this season and either led the team or was second in almost every major offensive category. His .330 average, 69 hits, 44 runs and 23 multi-hit games were team-highs, while his 10 doubles, 89 total bases and .426 slugging percentage were second only to Hayden.

He adds this honor to the multiple honors he has received during the 2014 season, which includes an All-ACC second team pick, an ABCA All-Region second team selection and his Johnny Bench Award semifinalist honor. He was also a two-time academic all-district first teamer and a three-time All-ACC Academic team member.

Hayden, who was an ABCA All-Region second team selection as a DH as well, was one of four Hokies to start all 53 games this season. The Twin Lakes, Wisconsin, native, was second on the team with 19 multi-hit games and tied Zagunis for the team-lead with 12 multi-RBI games. His 16 doubles, seven home runs, 43 RBIs, 99 total bases and .497 slugging percentage all led the Hokies.
