Former Virginia Tech pitcher Jesse Hahn (2008-10) has been called up to the Major League's by the San Diego Padres and will be making his MLB debut tonight as the starting pitcher against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Petco Park with first pitch scheduled for 10:10 p.m. EST. He will become just the 17th former Tech player to appear in an MLB game and the sixth pitcher. Here is a list of the other 16, courtesy of Baseball-Reference.

Of note regarding Hahn's start tonight
He will be just the fourth former Tech pitcher to start his major league debut. The others:

• Erwin Renfer (Detroit Tigers), September 18, 1913 at Washington Senators - he took the loss after going six innings, allowing five hits, five runs, four earned, three walks and striking out one;
• Mike Williams (Philadelphia Phillies), June 30, 1992 vs. Montreal Expos - he suffered the loss after going 4.2 innings, allowing six hits, four runs, one walk and striking out two;
• Joe Saunders (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim), August 16, 2005 vs. Toronto Blue Jays - he earned a no decision after 7.1 innings, five hits, two runs, two walks and two strikeouts.

He will be the first Hokie to make his MLB debut since Wyatt Toregas made a start at catcher for the Cleveland Indians on August 1, 2009 versus the Detroit Tigers. He singled in his first at bat and also knocked in a run.

Ironically, Saunders is also scheduled to start tonight for the Texas Rangers (an 8:05 p.m. first pitch against Baltimore) and if both do start, it would mark the first time two Hokie pitchers started a major league game on the same day.

The last time two former Tech pitchers saw action on the same day in the Major Leagues was April 19, 2002 when Mike Williams (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Brian Fitzgerald (Seattle Mariners) each threw for their respective clubs in relief efforts - WIlliams earned a one-inning save vs. Philadelphia and Fitzgerald tossed 1.2 innings vs. Texas. They also each tossed one inning on April 17, 2002 - the only other time those two appeared in an MLB game on the same day.

Interestingly, on April 20, 2000, Brad Clontz and Mike Williams both appeared in the SAME GAME out of the pen for the SAME TEAM for - ironically ... the Pittsburgh Pirates - the last time two Hokie players appeared in the same game. It was the only time they had done that in 2000, but had done it more than a dozen times before the previous season as well.
