GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech junior catcher Mark Zagunis was selected to the 2014 All-Atlantic Coast Conference’s Second Team, as announced on Monday by the league office in voting conducted by the ACC’s 14 head coaches.

Zagunis earns the school’s 10th ACC selection, either first or second team, in the school’s 10 years in the league and is the first Hokie to be named twice at the same position since Chris Stanton was an All-BIG EAST third baseman in both the 2003 (first) and 2004 (second) season. Former Tech player Steve Domecus is the only other Hokie to be selected All-ACC twice, both times as a second teamer as well, in 2009 (outfield) and 2010 (catcher).

Starting in all 53 games this season, Zagunis led the team in batting (.330), runs scored (44) and hits (69), while finishing second in slugging percentage (.426), on-base percentage (.426), RBIs (39), doubles (10), triples (2), home runs (2), total bases (89), walks (32), hit by pitch (6), sac flies (4) and stolen bases (16).

Among conference players, Zagunis was fourth in hits, seventh in batting average, tied for seventh in runs scored, tied for eighth in stolen bases and ninth in on-base percentage. In ACC games only, he was 13th in batting average (.312), fourth in hits (39) and second in stolen bases (12).

The Cinnaminson, N.J. native also led the team in multi-hit games with 23, which was second in the conference, and tied for multi-RBI games with 12, marking the only conference player during the regular season to have more than 20+ multi-hit games and more than 10+ multi-RBI games. Zagunis also led the team with a 10.45 at-bat per strikeout ratio.

Zagunis made 40 of his 53 starts behind the plate, with nine starts in the outfield and three as the DH. He batted 44 games in the three-hole, while being used as clean-up eight times and was in the two-hole once.
