ATLANTA, Ga. – It is becoming a not-so-popular trend for the Virginia Tech baseball team. For the seventh time in ACC play, the Hokies lost a one-run Friday night game, this time losing a 7-6 decision to Georgia Tech in 11 innings on Matt Gonzalez’ RBI single to right-center.
Overall, the Hokies are now 4-9 in one-run games and 2-3-1 in extra-inning games during the 2014 season. The loss dropped Tech to 18-26-1 overall, 7-18 in the ACC, while Georgia Tech improved to 27-19, 13-12 in the conference.
The Hokies seemed to be fighting back the entire game, but never gave up. They trailed by scores of 2-0, 4-1 and 5-4, but by the end of the seventh the game was tied at fives.
They plated their first run in the fifth on an RBI single by Alex Perez that brought home Saige Jenco, who doubled. In the sixth, they tied the game at fours, as Georgia Tech pitcher Josh Heddinger threw the ball into the outfield on a sac bunt attempt by Ricky Surum.
Sean Keselica and Logan Bible, who were on second and first, respectively, came around to score and Surum ended up at third. Ryan Tufts then brought him in with a grounder to third.
Georgia Tech’s A.J. Murray gave his team the 5-4 lead in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single that scored Thomas Smith, who was 3-for-4 on the night with two runs scored and an RBI.
The Hokies wasted no time in the seventh, as the first four batters all reached base. Perez singled. Zagunis singled, his second hit of the night – while his first hit in the third frame was the 200th of his college career. Brendon Hayden was hit by a pitch and Keselica drew a walk.
The Yellow Jackets then went to their pen and Dusty Isaacs pretty much closed the door on the Hokies’ offense. He struck out the final two batters of the inning and only allowed two hits over five innings pitched and struck out eight.
One of the hits, though, was a big one, as Hayden smacked his seventh home run of the year with two outs in the ninth, giving the Hokies a 6-5 lead.
They could not hold it in the bottom of the frame, as Smith came through with a two-out RBI single to tie the game at sixes.
In the 11th, a single, sac bunt and another single, put runners on the corners for Gonzalez. It was almost an exact situation as five days earlier, when UNC had the bases loaded in the ninth in a tie game. However, Gonzalez got a hit instead of a sac fly, but the result was the same for the Hokies.
Jenco, Perez and Zagunis all had two hits in the game, while Hayden led the offense with a three-hit night. Georgia Tech's Daniel Spingola led the Yellow Jackets with a four-hit evening.
The two teams will continue the three-game ACC series with a contest set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
