BLACKSBURG – The visiting Duke Blue Devils broke open the game with Virginia Tech in the middle frames and cruised to a 13-3 win on Saturday afternoon in the middle game of the ACC series at English Field.
The game was certainly decided by the team that hit better with runners in scoring position. The Blue Devils were 8 for 17 on their way to the victory, while Virginia Tech was just 2 for 14.
Through the game’s first three innings, Tech stranded seven runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded in the second when Duke held just a 1-0 lead. The Hokies left a season-high 17 men on in total and is actually the most men ever left on base for Tech in a game since joining the ACC.
The Blue Devils (23-17, 11-9 ACC) opened their three-run lead over the middle frames turning it into a 12-0 advantage as they plated three, two and four runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings respectively.
Tech (18-19-1, 7-13 ACC) scored its first run in the seventh when Mark Zagunis singled home Miguel Ceballos from second base.
Zagunis, who had three hits on the day, came through with an RBI single in the eighth to bring in Mac Caples – who singled for his first collegiate hit – to make it 12-2. Ceballos would later score on a wild pitch to supply the Hokies’ final run.
The two teams will conclude the ACC series with the final game of the three-game set on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
