The weekend series: Tech continues its 121st season of baseball by hosting the second of three straight ACC series at English Field. The Hokies welcome Maryland to Blacksburg for the last time as an ACC member, as the Terrapins will join the Big Ten in July.
Despite a 25-34-1 overall record against Maryland, since joining the ACC, the Hokies are 14-7 against them and have won five of the seven series (five straight). Of the 60 games played in the series, only 10 have been at English Field - Tech is 6-4. A snapshot of the Hokies’ history versus Maryland is located to the right.
Hokies playing at home: Because Mother Nature wreaked havoc on the Hokies’ baseball schedule through the first seven weeks of the season - Tech lost a total of five games - the team had to adjust and added four games to the April slate. As a result, starting with their ACC series at Virginia, the Hokies started a string of 20 straight games in the Commonwealth - with 14 at English Field - and includes three straight home ACC weekends.
Only once before in the program’s history as a member of the conference have the Hokies played either three straight road or three straight home series - 2007. Tech hosted North Carolina, Virginia and Clemson in back-to-back-to-back weekends. The Hokies are looking to improve on that 2007 stretch as they went just 1-8 in the nine games and opened the 2014 stretch 0-3.
Hokies playing at home: Due to the altering of the Hokies’ schedule, they enter the weekend with a scheduled five-game in five-day stretch that ends Tuesday with the Hokie-Smokey Classic in Salem, Va., against nationally-ranked Tennessee. The stretch will conclude a seven-game, eight-day span, as well as a 15-game, 19-day span that started with the three-game series at Virginia.
The just over weeklong stretch is similar to a nine-game in nine-day schedule Tech played from Feb. 23 through March 3 last year that included a single week in which they played six games. The team went 7-2 in the nine games and 5-1 in the last six contests of that stretch.
The last time a string like that happened before was in 2010, when Tech played nine games in nine days from March 12-20 and compiled a 4-5 mark. They also played six games in six straight days (March 12-17) and went 4-2. Lastly, that 2010 squad also had a 15-game, 19- day stretch from March 9 through March 27 and went 8-7.
