The weekend series: Tech continues its 121st season of baseball by hosting the first of three straight ACC series at English Field. The Hokies welcome Miami to Blacksburg for the sixth time since the series began back in 2005 - all games since both teams joined the ACC. The Hokies are just 7-20 all-time against the Hurricanes, but do hold a 5-8 record at English Field. Miami comes in ranked No. 24 and Tech is 6-12 all-time against a ranked Hurricane squad.
Enjoying English Field: The Hokies enter the weekend winners of their last three conference series at home, which includes the final two of 2013 and the first of this season. In fact, the Hokies enter Friday’s game winners of their last seven ACC home games - beating Virginia in both ends of a doubleheader on April 23, winning the only two games in the series against Wake Forest (May 17-18) and sweeping Pittsburgh to open this season. It’s the longest overall streak (spanning seasons), passing the six home ACC wins the 2010 squad posting in a single season from April 11 - May 15.
The three straight ACC series wins matches the second most (spanning seasons) while the 2010 squad posted the most in a single season - winning all five - and adding to the 2009 team that won their last two pushed the school’s longest home ACC series win streak to seven.
Lastly, Tech enters Friday’s game with an overall six-game home winning streak, tying for the third longest stretch ever over the past 10 seasons with the 2009 team. Back in 2012, Tech rattled off eight-straight wins (the most by a team since joining the ACC), while last year’s team posted a seven-game streak.
And that’s great news: Because Mother Nature wreaked havoc on the Hokies’ baseball schedule through the first seven weeks of the season - Tech lost a total of five games - they had to adjust and added four games to the April slate. So, last weekend when Tech played at Virginia, it started a string of 20 straight games in the Commonwealth - with 14 at English Field and that includes three straight home ACC weekends.
Only once before in Tech’s history as a member of the conference have the Hokies played either three straight road or home series - 2007, when they hosted North Carolina, Virginia and Clemson back-to-back-to-back. Tech will be looking to improve on that 2007 stretch as the Hokies went just 1-8 in those nine games.
