CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – After taking a two-run lead in the third inning, Virginia Tech saw the host No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers plate nine unanswered and register the 9-2 victory at Davenport Field on Saturday afternoon in ACC action.

Brendon Hayden gave the Hokies the lead with a two-run home run, his fifth of the season, which scored Mark Zagunis, who had singled and stole second. It was Zagunis’ second single of the game and his second stolen base, as well, as he’s pushed his season total to seven.

For Hayden, it was the start of a 3 for 4 day that also included a walk and a double to go along with his two RBI.

Tech (12-1-1, 5-6 ACC) again was hurt by its runners-in-scoring position line. The team was 1 for 11 in such instances and left 13 runners on base in the contest. The Hokies are 2 for 19 in the series with 21 men left on.

Virginia (22-4, 9-2 ACC) used a five-run fourth inning to take the lead and added one in the fifth and three in the sixth for insurance. Joe McCarthy led the Cavalier offense with a 3 for 4 day with a double, home run and four RBI and two runs scored.

Connor Jones earned the win out of the pen for Virginia as he threw the final 4.2 innings scoreless to improve to 4-0 on the season. Sean Keselica dropped to 2-1 with the loss.

The two teams will play the final game of the three-game conference series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
