WESTFIELD, Ind. Mark Zagunis drove in three runs and scored twice in the first two innings as Virginia Tech jumped out to an early lead and held on for an 8-3 victory over Notre Dame to even the ACC series at a game apiece on Saturday evening at Grand Park.

The Hokies jumped all over Fighting Irish starter Nick McCarty (0-5) as Saige Jenco and Alex Perez each drew a walk to lead off the game. Zagunis followed with a two-RBI double to right center and scored two batters later on a Sean Keselica single. With two outs, Tom Stoffel scored all the way from first on a throwing error on a Kyle Wernicki bunt attempt and Tech was up 4-0.

Tech (11-9-1, 4-4 ACC) plated four more runs in the second frame as Zagunis and Brendon Hayden notched RBI singles – scoring Ryan Tufts and Perez – Keselica added an RBI double, brining home Zagunis, and Stoffel drove in Hayden with a sac fly to put the Hokies up 8-0.

Notre Dame (8-13, 1-7 ACC) got one run in the second on a Phil Mosey grounder and Ricky Sanchez brought home two with a triple in the fourth.

Keselica (2-0) started on the mound for Tech and picked up the win after tossing five innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out two. Tanner McIntyre (2.2 IP) and Sean Kennedy (1.0) each struck out two in relief appearances.

Luke Scherzer picked up his third save of the year after coming into a bases loaded situation in the bottom of the ninth. He struck out Notre Dame’s Ryan Bull to end the game.

The teams will conclude the ACC series with game number three on Sunday morning at Grand Park with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
