The weekend: Tech continues its 121st season of baseball by hosting ACC newcomer Pittsburgh in its ACC home-opening weekend. Former Big East rivals meet for the first time in Blacksburg since 2004, where the Panthers hold a 5-1-1 mark against Tech. The two teams have met three times since Tech joined the ACC and the Hokies are 2-1 in those matchups, however the Panthers were 4-0 in Big East series.
Tech in ACC home opening weekends: Now in its 10th season in the conference, Tech is winless in its first nine home ACC openers, but seven of those have come to teams ranked no lower than 18th in the polls, including four in the top five (#2 FSU, ‘06; #4 UNC, ‘07; #3 FSU, ‘08; #1 UNC, ‘09).
Before this weekend, Tech had hosted only two unranked teams in its ACC home opening weekend - Maryland in 2010 and Duke in 2012. Overall, the Hokies hold a 5-19 record in their first home conference weekend, winning just one series - against the Terrapins in 2010. They beat Maryland 13-4 and 8-4 on Saturday and Sunday after being shut out in the Friday contest, 10-0.
That’s correct we have a tie: It hadn’t happen in 13 years, but as Tech and Richmond battled back-and-forth and into extra innings on March 11 - and with the game time pushing to almost four hours (3:57) - it was necassary to call the contest a tie due to darkness because Pitt Field, located on the Richmond campus, does not have lights.
The Hokies had not registered a tie on their slate since April 14, 2001 when they played at Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J. After 12 innings in that contest, the game with Seton Hall finished in a 7-7 tie. Interestingly, it was the second game of a doubleheader against the Pirates that saw Tech drop the first game 13-1 (in seven innings, which was the norm back then on DH days).
This year’s game marked the 26th tie in program history - the sixth that finished in extra frames.
Earning the free pass: In the Hokies’ loss to VCU on Wednesday afternoon, the team drew 14 walks, a single game record for the team since becoming a member of the ACC. Their previous high of 13 walks was set back in 2006 versus Marshall. The team came up three base-on-balls shy of tying the overall school record of 17 done twice - last versus Howard on April 1, 1990.
