CLEMSON, S.C. – After spotting Clemson two runs, the Virginia Tech baseball team fought back to take a lead only to see the Tigers respond and claim an 11-4 victory on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the three-game ACC series at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

With the win, No. 15 Clemson improves to 9-5 on the season and 3-0 in the ACC, while Tech falls to 6-7 and 0-3 in the conference.

For the sixth straight contest, Tech has surrendered the game’s first run as Clemson actually put the first two on the board with single runs in both the second and third innings, on an RBI single by Tyler Slaton and a sac fly from Steve Wilkerson.

The Hokies then took their only lead of the series in the fourth inning as the first four batters in the frame reached base. Tom Stoffel doubled and scored on Matt Dauby’s single. Kyle Wernicki plated Dauby with a triple and came home on Miguel Ceballos’ double. After a couple of sac bunts put runners on second and third, Ceballos scored on a wild pitch and Tech led 4-2.

Clemson reclaimed its lead in the home half of the frame as the Tigers sent eight men to the plate and plated four of them. Chris Okey had a big two-RBI single that broke the 4-4 tie and put the Tigers in front 6-4 – a lead they would not relinquish this time.

Picking up the win on the mound for Clemson, in relief, was Clate Schmidt, who moves his record to 2-2. Also out of the pen, Tanner McIntyre took the loss and is now 1-2.

Tech is quite busy this week with a road game at Richmond on Tuesday (3 p.m.), a home game with VCU on Wednesday (5:30 p.m.) and its ACC home-opening series with league newcomer Pittsburgh that starts Friday (5:30 p.m.).
