The weekend: Tech continues its 121st season of baseball by travelling to Clemson, S.C., to take on the Tigers. The Hokies have not been to Doug Kingsmore Stadium since 2010, when they were swept in a three-game series March 19-20. All-time, Tech is 7-21-1 versus the Tigers in Clemson. A snapshot of the Hokies’ history versus Clemson is located to the right.

Tech in ACC opening weekends: Now in its 10th season in the conference, Tech is 2-7 in opening series weekends in the league and that includes facing five ranked teams in its previous nine openers. The team opened the 2007 and 2010 seasons with series wins. This will also mark the eighth time the Hokies will open league play on the road.
In ACC opening games, the Hokies are 3-6, winning games in 2007, 2009, and 2012. All-time, after the opening weekend, Tech is a combined 8-19.

Zagunis earning some preseason accolades: Tech junior catcher Mark Zagunis received a pair of preseason honors heading into the 2014 baseball season. He was first tabbed a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association second team All-American catcher on Dec. 18 and followed that up with a Louisville Slugger second team All-American catcher nod announced by Collegiate Baseball newspaper on Dec. 23.

Perez stays in line-up: Junior second baseman Alex Perez made his 118th consecutive start in the season opener at The Citadel and has started every game this season to push his streak to 127 - every game since stepping foot on campus and the most of any player on the current roster. Of the 127 starts for Perez, 79 have come at second, 48 at shortstop. His streak began Feb. 17, 2012.
It’s the longest streak at the school since Michael Seaborn started 146 consecutive games - his were all at second base. His streak started on March 24, 2009 and ended May 21, 2011.

But so does Zagunis: According to research done by The Citadel’s SID Michael Hoffman, Perez’ streak is currently the 15th longest in the NCAA. However, right on his heels is Zagunis, who has started 117 straight games for the Hokies, which is the 19th longest streak in the nation. Tech is the only team on Hoffman’s list that has more than one player.
