The weekend: Tech continues its 121st season of baseball by returning to an unfamiliar state facing unfamiliar foes. The Hokies travel to the Pelican state (Louisiana) for the first time since April 8-9, 1995 when it played at Tulane as members of the Metro Conference. Of Tech’s three opponents this weekend, the Hokies have played just one - Toledo - just three times and not since 1998.

Playing in the Pelican state: Tech has played just 13 games in Louisiana in its history and they all came within a five-year span (1990-95) and 12 were played in New Orleans either against Tulane (9), as a member of the Metro, or part of the Metro Tournament (3). The only other game was played in Hammond against Southeastern Louisiana. The Hokies’ overall mark is 3-10 in the state, but actually won their last game there - a 13-9 win over the Green Wave.

Tech history against its foes: The Hokies have never played LSU, but have played current members of the SEC 113 times. They own a 51-59-3 overall mark, however that includes a 31-33-1 record versus South Carolina and a 10-9-2 record against Tennessee. Meanwhile, this will be the first meeting ever between the Hokies and any team from the current Southwestern Athletic Conference, which Texas Southern is a member. That would leave the Big Sky, Big West, Horizon League (which would have happened had not the storm come - Youngstown State is a member), The Summit League and the WAC as leagues that Tech has yet to play a team from. Lastly, the Hokies are 29-25 all-time against teams from the Mid-American Conference, playing Ohio (9-14) and Kent State (8-3) the most.

Zagunis earning some preseason accolades: Tech junior catcher Mark Zagunis has received a pair of preseason honors heading into the 2014 baseball season. He was first tabbed a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association second team All-American catcher on Dec. 18 and followed that up with a Louisville Slugger second team All-American catcher nod announced by Collegiate Baseball newspaper on Dec. 23.
