BLACKSBURG – Former Tech baseball head coach Chuck Hartman was the honored guest at the Hokies’ seventh annual Baseball Night in Blacksburg, held Saturday evening, Feb. 8, in the West Side Stadium Club of Lane Stadium, and his speech certainly entertained the crowd.

Hartman’s humor was on full display as he spun stories from his early days of coaching at High Point, spoke about his days in the Tech dugout, and provided insight into his relationships with umpires.

“Coach Hartman was entertaining as expected,” Tech head coach Patrick Mason said. “It was great to hear all his stories and I am very grateful he was willing to share them.”

Other proceedings on the night included the Chuck and Ellen Hartman Service Award recipient recognition – an award that goes to a person that has made significant contributions to the baseball program over the years – and that went to former Tech AD Jim Weaver.

Mason also spoke to the crowd for about 10 minutes and stated in a new tradition he’s starting, which is announcing the upcoming season’s captains at the event. The 2014 baseball captains will be redshirt-senior Tanner McIntyre and junior Mark Zagunis.

“Baseball Night in Blacksburg was once a gain a huge success,” Mason said. “We are extremely appreciative to all those who came out for the night in support of our program, and it was especially nice to see such a strong showing from baseball alumnus.”

All proceeds of the program will go to Virginia Tech baseball and the Hokies’ efforts to improve various aspects of their program. The team opens its 2014 season this weekend with a four-game tournament in Charlotte, N.C. (click here for schedule).
