BLACKSBURG – Looking to step out of the box as it tries to step up its efforts in supporting the community, the Virginia Tech baseball team has launched into a new venture as one of its 19 Ways. The Hokies will be involved with the “19 Trades” of 19 Ways – a way to use social media, email and word of mouth to barter up to a greater item to benefit the community.

“The other day at the field, Coach Mason, Coach Kunigonis and I were discussing our 19 Ways program and the conversation turned toward the ‘red paperclip’ story – how one guy traded up from a red paper clip to a house,” assistant baseball coach Robert Woodard said.

“So, we thought why couldn’t we do something like that? And we figured a great jumping off item to begin the trading would be a signed Patrick Mason baseball. We are all very excited to see where we can go from here and see exactly how high we can raise the ceiling – for a great cause.”

As the trades progress, the end result will dictate the final beneficiary of the final trade, but the outcome will certainly be donated to a recipient within the Blacksburg community. The target date to conclude the trade process is May 1, 2014.

If anyone is interested in bartering something for the current item (unless there is an exchange in process), please email coach Woodard at rswoodard@vt.edu. The coaching staff will be aggressively seeking barters and are expecting things to change rather quickly so don’t delay in contacting them.

The newest item (pictured above) is a BCS-worn football helmet, which is signed by head football coach Frank Beamer. If attending, the helmet will be up for trade during Baseball Night in Blacksburg.
