CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Virginia Tech was again on the wrong side of a great pitchers’ duel, this time on Saturday night at Alex Rodriguez Park. Tech’s Devin Burke and Miami’s Bryan Radziewski combined to allow just one earned run over 16 innings pitched in a 2-0 Hurricane victory in the second of the three-game ACC series.

Burke went seven innings for the Hokies and allowed six hits and struck out three. The only earned run surrendered in the game was in the fifth inning on a two-out triple by Chris Barr.

Miami (19-7, 4-4 ACC) would tack on another unearned run in the seventh to take the 2-0 lead.

Burke started the eighth, but quickly saw the Hurricanes load the bases on a walk, hit-by-pitch and single. Clark Labitan was called in from the pen and kept the Canes off the board, getting back-to-back strikeouts and a grounder to third to end the threat.

Radziewski picked up the complete game shutout victory by limiting the Hokies to just two hits and a walk, while striking out 16 batters – the most by a Hurricane pitcher since Joe Gray struck out 16 on March 17, 1989. It also tied for the sixth-most strikeouts by a pitcher in the team’s history.

He improved to 3-0 on the season while Burke lost his first of the year and is now 5-1. Burke was looking to become the first Hokie starter to begin a season 6-0 since Joe Saunders back in 2002. He also had a chance to be the first Tech starter to win his first six starts to a season since Brad Clontz won his first seven back in 1992.

Tech (17-7, 4-4 ACC) will complete the three-game series on Sunday with Miami with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
