BLACKSBURG, Va. - Just three weeks remain until Virginia Tech welcomes back to campus former Tech players and Major League Baseball World Series champions Franklin Stubbs and Brad Clontz as the honored guests for the Hokies' sixth annual “Baseball Night in Blacksburg”.

The event, which is sponsored by Bull and Bones Brewhaus and Grill, will be held on Friday, Feb. 8 from 6-9 p.m. in the West Side Stadium Club of Lane Stadium. Tickets are limited, but still remain. The cost $75 per person ($35 for kids 13 and under) can be purchased by calling the Virginia Tech baseball office at (540) 231-3671.

In addition to a question and answer session with Stubbs and Clontz, “Baseball Night in Blacksburg” will include a dinner catered by Bull and Bones, silent and live auctions for various professional sports and Virginia Tech items, and a chance to meet the entire Virginia Tech baseball team a week before the Hokies open their 2013 season in Wilmington, N.C.

For those interested in a more intimate experience, a private, open-bar reception with Stubbs, Clontz and other notable figures will be held from 5-6 p.m. prior to the public portion of the evening. Access to the private reception can be gained by purchasing a ticket for $200. A Home Run Package of eight tickets can be purchased for $1,500.

“We are extremely excited to have Tech’s only two World Series champions, Franklin and Brad, back on campus as honored guests for our 2013 baseball night, which has become such a phenomenal annual event,” Hughes said. “These two men will help us celebrate the beginning of a new season, and I can’t say enough about what their inclusion in this event means to the entire HokieBall family.”

Stubbs set nine school records while at Tech - two of which still stand - and became the Hokies’ first All-American baseball player with his selection as a sophomore in 1981. He is also the only Tech player to be twice named All-American, with a repeat selection in 1982. Continuing Hokie firsts, Stubbs was the first Tech player drafted in the first round of the spring MLB draft - the 19th pick by Los Angeles in 1982 - and became the first Hokie with a World Series ring, winning one with the Dodgers in 1988, when they defeated Oakland four games to one.

Clontz also left his mark in the Hokie record books, setting a school record with 12 wins on the mound in 130 innings pitched - both records still stand - with 115 strikeouts, second all-time in a single season, as a junior in 1992. He parlayed that success into a 10th round selection in the MLB draft by the Braves that June. He’s one of just two former Tech players to appear in two World Series (Johnny Oates, 2) and one of three that appeared in more than one postseason (Oates 3 - Phillies, 1967; Dodgers, 1977-78; and Joe Saunders 4 - Angels, 2008-09, D-backs, 2011, Orioles, 2012 ). He became the second Hokie with a World Series ring, helping the Braves to the 1995 title over Cleveland, four games to two.

All proceeds of the banquet will go to Virginia Tech baseball and the Hokies’ efforts to improve various aspects of their program. Recent efforts include the building of an indoor baseball facility beyond the left-field foul pole at English Field, which is available for the team’s use year-round, and enhancements to English Field, which included the addition of artificial turf and expanded dugouts just prior to the start of the 2012 season.
