BLACKSBURG, Va. – Behind a strong pitching performance by Maryland’s Brett Harman, the Terrapins were able to even the ACC series with Virginia Tech on Saturday at one game apiece with their 8-1 victory at English Field.
Harman threw eight innings, struck out 10 Hokies,scattered three hits, walked two batters and allowed just one unearned run, in the sixth after his team had already jumped out to an 8-0 lead.
Maryland (28-18, 8-15 ACC) opened the scoring in the third on a solo home run by Matt Bosse and he gave his team a 3-0 lead with a two-run home run in the fifth, which was part of a seven-run frame for the Terrapins.
Virginia Tech (29-16, 9-14) scored its lone run thanks to a pair of Maryland errors. Brendon Hayden drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on a Johnny Morales grounder that was misplayed. He advanced to third on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Mark Zagunis and scored on an Andrew Rash grounder that was also misfielded.
Alex Perez had two of the Hokies' three hits in the game, which included a double, and Sean Keselica came off the bench and notched his team-high tying fourth pinch hit of the season.
Harman improved to 6-3 with the victory, while Devin Burke lost his first decision of the year. Patrick Scoggin tossed the last four innings for Tech, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
The two teams will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at English Field with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
