TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Marc Zecchino tossed arguably one of his best games ever in a Hokie uniform, but No. 4 Florida State still go the better of Virginia Tech on Saturday night at Dick Howser Stadium, taking a 2-1 decision from the Hokies and clinching the ACC series for the Seminoles.

Zecchino went seven solid innings and allowed seven base runners – three hits, three walks and a hit batsman – but faced just three over the minimum as Tech turned two double plays behind him and Marc Zagunis threw out two base stealers.

The only frame the Seminoles (23-4, 10-1 ACC) scored in was the fourth, as they took a 2-0 lead. Devon Travis led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a single by James Ramsey, who advanced to second on error. Jayce Boyd followed with an RBI groundout and Stephen McGee hit a sac fly for the second run.

Not another Florida State batter would touch second base the rest of the night, even when Zecchino was replaced in the eighth by Clark Labitan, who pitched a perfect frame.

The Hokies (18-11, 2-9 ACC) had an early scoring chance in the third when Brendon Hayden and Kyle Wernicki opened the inning with back-to-back singles. However, FSU starter Mike Compton got a strikeout and a double play to end the threat.

He allowed just one run over 7.2 innings of work, which was a solo home run by Tyler Horan which led off the top of the fifth and cut the Hokie deficit in half. It was Horan’s seventh home run of the year.

In the sixth, Zagunis was standing on third with one after singling to lead off the innings, stealing second and moving to third on a sac bunt by Alex Perez. But again, a strikeout and a groundball ended the frame.

Compton improved to 6-0 with the victory, while Zecchino’s record fell to 2-4. Robert Benincasa picked up his ninth save of the year with a perfect ninth inning.

The teams will complete the three-game series on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
