BLACKSBURG, Va. – Duke handed Virginia Tech its first shutout loss in almost two years with a 13-0 victory over the Hokies at English Field, in a game that started on Saturday and continued on Sunday.
The Hokies dropped to 17-8 overall, 2-6 in conference, while Duke improved to 10-14, 3-5 in the ACC.
On Saturday , Duke opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with Will Piwnica-Worms knocking in two with a double that scored Andrew Istler, who was walked, and Andy Perez, who was hit by a pitch. The Blue Devils added a third run, which was unearned, in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Istler.
The Hokies had a couple chances early, stranding two in the third inning, and then had runners at the corners with one out in the fourth inning, but Duke starter Trent Swart started a 1-6-3 double play to get out of the frame.
The Blue Devils increased their lead in the sixth as they sent 10 men to the plate and scored five times. Duke tacked on three more in the seventh to push its advantage to 11-0.
The game was suspended in the bottom of the eighth inning with two outs and a 3-2 count to Brandon Hayden. It resumed at noon on Sunday.
Duke added two more runs on a Piwnica-Worms two-run home run in the ninth to provide the final score. Swart improved to 3-2 with the win and Tech starter Marc Zecchino suffered the loss and is now 2-3.
The last time Tech had been held without a run was 118 games ago, when Wake Forest shutout the Hokies, 5-0, in the first game of a doubleheader on March 27, 2010.
The two teams will finish their ACC series on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
