Tech's Rash to compete in College Home Run Derby
Sophomore Andrew Rash will take part in the TD Ameritrade event in Omaha, Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb. - Virginia Tech sophomore Andrew Rash, along with seven of the nation’s other power hitters, will compete in the second annual TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby, which will be hosted at the new TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha on Saturday, July 2 at 8:30 p.m. CBS will televise the event nationwide on Sunday, July 3 at 2 p.m.

Rash, who hit an ACC-leading 18 home runs during the regular season and finished sixth in the country in home runs hit per game (0.35), will be joined by Georgia Southern sophomore Victor Roache, who led the nation with 30 long balls in 2011.

“I’m proud to represent Virginia Tech and our baseball program at an event such as this and I’m honored to be picked as one of the top eight hitters in the nation,” Rash said. “I am really excited to make the trip to Omaha and compete in the event. I’m looking forward to hiting in such a great ballpark as the TD Ameritrade Park.”

Others in the event include redshirt-freshman Daniel Aldrich of the College of Charleston (22), Bucknell senior Doug Shribman (16), East Tennessee State junior Dylan Pratt (16), Arizona State sophomore Joey DeMichele (9), Vanderbilt sophomore Conner Harrell (9) and one more player to be named later.

The Derby will also feature three Major League Baseball legends, Hall of Famer Paul Molitor and Joe Carter, who will serve as honorary hitting coaches for the participants, and Frank Thomas, who will provide color commentary for the CBS broadcast.

The event is taking place before the World-Herald’s 27th annual fireworks display, which includes some of the largest displays in Omaha and throughout the Midwest during the Independence Day holiday weekend.
