BLACKBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech used three doubles by Chad Morgan and strong pitching from Joe Parsons and Manny Martir to defeat No. 20 Clemson, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at English Field. With the victory, the Hokies improve to 29-23 overall and 10-17 in ACC action, while the Tigers fall to 36-16 overall and 15-12 in league play.
Parsons improved to 7-2 on the season and won his third straight ACC start. He pitched six and two thirds innings, allowing five hits and just one run. Martir got the third out in the seventh inning and closed the game to earn his second save of the season.
The Hokies opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Morgan hit a lead-off double to right-center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by third baseman Johnny Morales. Morgan then scored on an infield groundout by left fielder Jake Atwell.
The Hokies turned in a defensive gem in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Clemson’s Brad Miller tried to score from first on a double to left-center by Will Lamb, but was thrown out at the plate on a relay from Tony Balisteri to Michael Seaborn. Morgan put the tag on Miller and the Clemson threat was thwarted.
Parsons kept the Tigers off the board until the top of the fifth inning, when he walked Miller with the bases loaded to force in Spencer Kieboom. It stopped a scoreless streak for Parsons that reached 17 innings.
Over his last four appearances – three starts and one relief appearance – he has allowed just two earned runs over 25-plus frames and struck out 17.
Tech jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, as center fielder Balisteri singled, stole second and scored on Morgan’s second double of the game.
The Hokies added on to the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning when right fielder Chad Pinder singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Balisteri. Pinder then scored on Morgan’s third double of the game.
In the top of the ninth inning, Clemson’s Chris Epps scored on a wild pitch by Martir, which advanced Jon McGibbon to third base. But Martir got Phil Pohl to ground out to give the Hokies the 3-2 victory.
Morgan was three for three with two RBI to go with his three doubles and Seaborn recorded two hits for the Hokies.
The Hokies return to action on Tuesday night, as they host VMI in the final regular season non-conference game of the season. First pitch will be at 5:30 p.m.
