COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Behind a 14-hit attack and more strong pitching, Virginia Tech swept its first ACC series after defeating Maryland 13-5 on Sunday afternoon at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.

With the win, and coupled with Boston College and Wake Forest losses, the Hokies improved to 23-19 overall and 7-14 in the ACC and into the eighth spot in the overall conference standings. Maryland dropped to 17-25, 4-17 in the league.

Every Tech starter had a hit and scored a run in the contest, led by Tony Balisteri with three hits and a pair of runs, while Michael Seaborn, Tyler Horan and Johnny Morales all crossed the plate twice. Seaborn and Chad Morgan each drove in a team-high three RBI.

For the third time this weekend, Tech put the first runs on the board, this time in the second inning. With one out, Balisteri reached on an infield single and Horan double to right center. Morgan followed with a double of his own to plate both Hokies and Tech led 2-0.

Two frames later, Andrew Rash started an eight-run inning with a led off walk. Balisteri doubled and Horan was hit by a pitch to load the bases, which ended the day for Terrapin starter Chuck Ghysels (1-4).

Reliever Jeff Crosswhite walked the first batter he faced, which was Morgan, who registered his third RBI of the game with the free pass. Morales then singled to bring in another, marking the eighth straight game he has either scored a run or drove one in.

After the first out of the inning, Seaborn walked before the next four batters all drove in runs – Ronnie Shaban (2) with a single, Tim Smalling (1) with a single, Rash (1) on a double, and Balisteri (1) with a single – to make it a 10-0 contest.

Also, for the third time this weekend, the Hokies received a quality start as Joe Parsons (5-2) allowed just one earned run on six hits with one walk, a hit batter, and four strikeouts in six innings of work. Manny Martir threw two scoreless innings with one walk and a strikeout, and Jake Atwell pitched the ninth, allowing one earned run.

Tech has now won five straight games on the road overall and nine of their last 10. The Hokies will play a home game against North Carolina A&T on Tuesday starting at 5:30 p.m. before heading back out for their final road ACC series at Duke next weekend.
