BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech dropped the series finale to Florida State, 18-12, at English Field on Sunday afternoon. The loss drops the Hokies to 19-19 overall and 4-14 in ACC action, while the Seminoles, ranked No. 11 nationally, improve to 26-10 overall and 11-7 in league play.
Florida State opened the scoring in the top of the third inning. Devon Travis reached on a throwing error by shortstop Tim Smalling and scored on Sherman Johnson’s home run to center field.
Tech answered in the bottom of the third, as third baseman Johnny Morales singled and scored on a triple to right field by right fielder Jake Atwell. Atwell then scored one pitch later on a double to left by second baseman Michael Seaborn. Seaborn then moved to third on an infield groundout by first baseman Ronny Shaban. Seminole starter Hunter Scantling then hit shortstop Tim Smalling and left fielder Andrew Rash with pitches to load the bases and then walked center fielder Tony Balisteri to score Seaborn. Tech then scored two more runs, as designated hitter Matt Blow singled to right, scoring Rash and Smalling.
Tech moved the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth, as Atwell walked and scored ahead of Seaborn’s second home run of the season. Shaban then walked and scored one out later on a double to right-center by Rash, who moved to third on an error by the center fielder Mike McGhee. After Balisteri walked, Rash scored on a errant pick-off play at first base, that allowed Balisteri to move to third. Balisteri then scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Blow.
The Seminoles led off the top of the fifth with a double to right-center by Johnson, who then scored on a single to left by McGhee. McGhee then scored ahead of Boyd’s home run to left. In the bottom of the sixth, Rash hit his conference-leading 13th home run of the season.
Florida State took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Ramsey and Boyd singled and Stuart Tapley walked to load the bases. Reliever Manny Martir came in and walked in two runs and was replaced by Sean McDermott, who issued a run on a fielder’s choice. FSU then tied the game on a two-run double by Travis, who moved to third on the throw. Travis then scored on a sacrifice fly to left, giving the Seminoles the lead, 12-11.
FSU scored six runs in the top of the eighth, highlighted by Taiwan Easterling’s first career home run, a grand slam to left. The Hokies scored a final run in the bottom of the ninth, on a sacrifice fly by Seaborn, scoring Morales, who reached on an error.
Tyler Everett (1-1) picked up his first win of the season in relief and Brian Bush earned his first save of the season. McDermott (1-2) took the loss for the Hokies.
Seaborn drove in four runs, going three for five. Rash also had three hits, driving in two runs on a pair of doubles and a home run and Blow also drove in three runs for the Hokies.
The Hokies won the first game of the series on Friday night, before dropping the final two game on Saturday and Sunday. Tech returns to action on Tuesday night, as they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to face East Tennessee State at 7 p.m.
