RADFORD, Va. – Ronnie Shaban knocked in four runs, which included a two-run home run, and Tim Smalling had three hits, including two solo home runs, and Virginia Tech rolled to a 13-7 victory over Radford, Wednesday night at RU Baseball Stadium.
Virginia Tech (18-17) pounded out 17 hits in all, seven of which went for extra bases, as all Hokie starters had at least one hit, while Radford (18-15) had 13 hits and became Tech’s first opponent in 2011 to hit a pair of home runs in a game.
Tech put the first run on the board in the first inning as Smalling drove home Michael Seaborn with a two-out single. Seaborn reached with his team-leading 12th double of the season and scored his team-high 36th run.
It was another two-out hit that put the second Hokie run on the board as Johnny Morales doubled home Tony Balisteri, who singled, stole second and moved to third on a groundout before scoring his 34th run of the year.
Radford cut its deficit in half with a solo home run from Alex Guerra in the bottom of the second, despite Tech starter Patrick Scoggin striking out the side in the frame. However, Smalling quickly gave the Hokies their two-run lead back with a two-out solo home run over the right field fence.
The Highlanders tied the game in the bottom of the third using back-to-back singles and a one-out walk to load the bases. Matt Mack singled home Zach Costello and Matt Hillsinger, but was thrown out on a steal attempt before Guerra struck out swinging to end the threat.
The Hokies answered in the top of the fourth with two of their own. Shaban hit a two-out single to plate Morales and Jake Atwell, who hit back-to-back singles and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Seaborn.
After Radford made it 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth, Chad Morgan hit a two-out solo home run in the top of the fifth to make it a two-run game once again and Smalling went deep again for his seventh home run of the year in the seventh.
Tech broke the game wide open in the eighth, as both Gabe Ortiz and Atwell drove in a run and Shaban hit a two-out two-run home run, which pushed his RBI total to 34. Twelve of the Hokies 13 runs in the game came with two outs.
Scoggin picked up the win and improved to 3-1 on the season while Michael Costello took the loss for Radford and is now 2-3.
The Hokies will now turn their attention to their visitors who are coming into Blacksburg for the weekend. No. 11 Florida State will face Tech in an ACC series at English Field, which starts Friday at 5:30 p.m.
