KINGSTON, R.I. – For the fourth time in ACC play alone, Virginia Tech dropped a one-run contest, losing to the Boston College Eagles in the second game of the series, 2-1, at Bill Beck Field Saturday afternoon.

Tech starter Marc Zecchino suffered the loss despite striking out nine batters over six frames. He did walk five and allowed six hits and the two earned runs. Manny Martir and Jake Joyce each threw a scoreless inning to round out the Hokies effort on the mound for the day.

Tim Smalling drove in the Hokies lone run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the first. Tech scored the run without a hit as Tony Balisteri led off the frame with a walk. He moved to second with a stolen base and took third on a wild pitch before Smalling knocked in his 23 run of the season.

Zecchino worked out of jams in the bottom of the first and second by getting double plays and Boston College left five men on base through the first three frames. He worked a perfect fourth to keep the Hokies on top 1-0.

Boston College (10-10, 4-4) used a pair of one-out singles to put runners on first and second in the fifth before Zecchino struck out the Eagles’ Friday hero Andrew Melchionda (three RBI). However, Matt Watson drew a walk to load the bases and Marc Perdios singled home a pair to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

That would be all the run support Nate Bayuk would need. He came into the game in the third, relieving Matt Alvarez, who threw two innings, struck out three and surrendered the lone Hokie run. He allowed just one hit over the last seven innings and struck out two to improve to 3-2 on the year.

Virginia Tech (13-12, 0-8) will conclude its series with Boston College on Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
