KINGSTON, R.I. – It was another similar ACC contest for Virginia Tech in 2011, as the Hokies fell behind early to Boston College then tried to make a comeback. This time the team's ninth-inning rally fell two runs short and the Eagles took the first game of the series, 5-3, at Bill Beck Field Friday afternoon.
Tim Smalling, who broke up the Boston College no-hitter in the seventh inning with a single, led the Hokies with a pair of hits. Anthony Melchionda had three hits for the Eagles, drove in three runs and scored two times.
Virginia Tech (13-11, 0-7 ACC) found themselves down 5-0 entering the top of the ninth, but a one-out rally plated its first run of the game. Ronnie Shaban and Smalling each singled before Andrew Rash drove home his 27th run of the year with another single.
Michael Seaborn drew a walk to load the bases and pinch hitter Tyler Horan plated another run with a ground-ball out. With runners on the corners, Horan moved to second on a wild pitch and Chad Morgan singled home another run to cut the deficit to a pair of runs, but the game would end a batter later with runners on the corners.
Boston College (9-10, 3-4 ACC) opened their scoring in the first, as Andrew Lawrence drew a walk and Melichionda followed with a two-run home run, his first of the season. He drove in his third run of the day in the third with a single plating Tom Bourdon.
The Hokies Joe Mantiply would settle down after that, retiring 10 straight Eagles and allowed just two hits through the fourth through seventh frames.
On the other side, the Eagles used five pitchers through six innings and eight in all. Eric Stevens allowed the first hit to Smalling in the seventh, but was erased on Boston College’s second double play of the afternoon.
The Eagles pushed two more runs across the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning, with an RBI single by Matt Watson and a groundout RBI from Garret Smith, runs turned out to be the difference in the game.
The two teams will continue the three-game series with another contest on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
