CORAL GABLES, Fla. – It was another low-scoring affair in the second game of the Virginia Tech-Miami ACC series at Alex Rodriguez Park with the Hurricanes posting a 2-1 victory Saturday night.
It wasn’t without some thrill, though, in the ninth as the Hokies put two runners on board with two outs. Miami went to its closer and Sam Robinson ended the game with a fly ball to right. The win improved Miami to 7-8, 2-0 in the ACC while Tech falls to 10-6, 0-2 in the ACC.
The Hurricanes again struck first in this game, but it took a little longer than the day before. This was partly due to the Hokies defense as it turned a pair of double plays behind Tech starter Marc Zecchino.
In the inning in which Miami did push its first two runs across the plate, it appeared Tech would dodge another scare. In the fifth with one on and one out, Nathan Melendres stroked a double into the left field corner. However, Harold Martinez, who had two hits in the game, overran third base and was tagged out.
Zeke DeVoss and Stephen Perez followed with back-to-back two-out RBI singles for the Hurricanes to put the home team up 2-0.
In the top of the seventh, Andrew Rash blasted his seventh home run of the season, a solo shot to lead off the frame, cutting the Hokies’ deficit in half at 2-1.
Zecchino (2-1) went five full innings, allowed six hits and three walks, two earned runs and struck out four. In relief, Manny Martir went 1 2/3 innings and struck out one, Jake Joyce struck out two in one inning of work and Ronnie Shaban finished the eighth with a groundout.
Again, Miami received a strong outing from its starter as E.J. Encinosa (1-2) threw 8 2/3 innings and allowed five hits and no walks, the Rash home run and struck out three. He got help from his infield and especially from Brad Fieger. The third baseman registered eight assists in the contest while he threw 17 groundball outs total. Robinson was then called upon to get the final out for his second save of the year.
The teams will conclude the three-game ACC weekend opening series on Sunday with first pitch against scheduled for 1 p.m.
