BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech baseball again split a doubleheader with visiting Bryant on Saturday at English Field. After pounding out 12 hits and registering a 15-0 shutout victory, the Hokies bats were silenced in a 5-2 loss in the second game.

Virginia Tech’s record now stands at 9-4 and Bryant is 5-5.

Tim Smalling and Ronnie Shaban each drove in four runs for the day, while three pitchers combined to shutout the Bulldogs in game one – Patrick Scoggin, Manny Martir, and Kyle Cichy.

Four straight singles to lead off game one plated a pair of runs and the Hokies sent 10 men to the plate in the first scoring six times.

Tech broke the game open in the fourth. Ahead 7-0, they sent 14 batters to the plate and the first eight all reached base and scored. Shaban had a two-RBI single in the frame, while Andrew Rash brought two more in with a double. Smalling ended the scoring with a two RBI single.

Scoggin allowed three hits, while striking out one in four innings pitched. Martir struck out four in his four innings on the hill and picked up the win, and Cichy finished the game with a perfect ninth.

In the second game, Bryant scored an unearned run in the fourth, which ended a string of 27 consecutive scoreless frames thrown by the Hokie pitching staff.

Tech used three doubles to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Tony Balisteri led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Seaborn, and back-to-back RBI doubles by Smalling and Shaban put their team in the lead.

Unfortunately for the Hokies, their pitching staff allowed just six hits, but three errors and five walks to the Bulldogs – all of which scored – gave them a split in the twin bill.

Virginia Tech will have a couple days off before playing the first of four games in the state of Florida. They face Florida Atlantic on Tuesday at 6:30 pm then open ACC play next weekend against the Miami Hurricanes.
