GREENSBORO, N.C. – Complete pairings and starting times have been announced for the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Championship, which will be held Wednesday through Sunday (May 26-30) at Greensboro’s NewBridge Bank Park.
Sixth-seeded Virginia Tech (36-19, 16-14 ACC), making its first ACC Championship appearance since 2005 when all teams were invited, will open play on Thursday at 8 p.m., against third-seeded Georgia Tech (44-11, 21-9 ACC). The Hokies took two-of-three from the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta back on April 23-25.
Tech’s second game of the eight-team tournament will come on Friday at 4 p.m., against Atlantic Division champion and second-seeded Clemson (37-19, 18-12 ACC), which swept the Hokies when the two teams clashed in Clemson March 19-20.
The Hokies, who finished the regular season fourth in the Coastal Division, will conclude pool play on Saturday at 8 p.m., against seventh-seeded NC State (36-20, 15-15 ACC). The Wolfpack was the lone ACC team not on the Hokies’ schedule this season, but took two two-of-three from Tech when they matched up in Raleigh in 2009.
Under the pool-play format, each team will play one game against each of the other three opponents in its pool Wednesday-Saturday. The two teams with the best records within their respective brackets will advance to the title game on Sunday, with the winner earning the ACC’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Sunday’s title game between the pool-play winners is set for 1 p.m.
The other pool includes top-seeded Virginia, fourth-seeded Miami, fifth-seeded Florida State and eighth-seeded Boston College.
