BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech relief pitcher Ben Rowen was named to the 2010 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 3 Baseball Team on Thursday.
Nominations and voting for the team was conducted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America. There is a University Division (Division I programs) and a College Division (DII, DIII, NAIA, NJCAA programs).
To be nominated, student-athletes were required to have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale) in both undergrad and graduate work, reached sophomore athletic and academic standing, and completed at least one academic year at their institution.
Rowen, a management major, was voted to the second team of the University Division. Earlier this season, he was added to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award watch list, which is an award given to nation’s top relief pitcher. The Ranchos Palos Verdes, Calif., native was a member of the 2009 All-ACC Academic Team.
So far this season, Rowen leads the ACC in pitching appearances with 28, while ranking seventh in the league with four saves. He has a 4-1 record with a 3.16 earned run average. He has struck out 46 batters over 37 innings of work, while walking just seven.
